The Pillars of the Church: The Family of God
Are you part of the family of God? You know, those people in that building down the street who worship the triune God: the Father, alive on His throne, in heaven, sovereignly doing whatever He pleases. Jesus, His Son, alive, at the Father’s right hand, interceding for His people and ruling over the heavens and the earth. The Holy Spirit, alive, indwelling all of God’s people, conforming them into the image of Jesus. Are you part of this family?
In 1 Timothy 3:15, the Apostle Paul calls this family, “…the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.” As “a pillar and buttress of the truth,” Paul was calling on the family of God to bear the earthly responsibility of upholding Jesus and the truth of His gospel. From the twelve Apostles to the faithful men and women today, these pillars of the church strengthened the church. Their faith encouraged others, their knowledge of the scriptures gave others direction, their walk with God was looked up to as an example to follow, their spiritual wisdom and sensitivity was respected. As a building without support columns would cave in, a church, without such pillars, would cease to function!
Beloved, before you can become part of this family, you must be born into it. Jesus said, “…no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” (John 3:3). This requires that you personally recognize that Jesus died in your place on that old, rugged cross, paying the Father’s penalty for your sins. You must confess and repent of your sins and embrace the words, the ways, the will, and the worship of the risen Christ. From Jesus to the Apostles, to the pillars of the church today, this was their message. O, believe this message, and by God’s amazing grace, become part of the family of God today, and a pillar of the church tomorrow!
