Marketplace Ministry
Hello, and welcome to In The Lighthouse, brought to you by Carry the Light Ministries. This is Daphne Collins, your host for our time together. The lighthouse is your safe harbor from the storm. As I mentioned in our pilot episode, the storms we experience can be short-lived, and will provide lessons so that we don’t make the same mistakes twice. However, there are also those storms that can last for years – with intermittent periods of calm – similar to an eye of a hurricane. The person who claims to be a follower of Jesus Christ understands that, to take up one’s cross, it’s important to know that the journey will not be an easy one. Jesus warned his disciples in Matthew 10:16, “Behold, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” He also told them in John 16:33, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” Well, this is good to know. Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, said that he would never leave us. He showed his disciples what it’s like to be calm when the storm is raging all around them. We see this account in Mark 4:35-41, when Jesus silenced the wind. His disciples were amazed at how Jesus could command the wind and the waves. They were terrified and cried out to him for help. Who would you go to for help when you are in the midst of your storm? Do we look everywhere except to the author and finisher of our faith? Today, we will meet a woman whose epic storm began in childhood, and carried forward into adulthood. Although the wind and the waves were raging, Jesus was with her through it all. Okay, let’s get started!
There are many of us who can recall the innocence of childhood; and the people and places we visited along the way. Some of us can remember a favorite song or game we played with our friends. We might look at pictures of ourselves from childhood with fond memories of family gatherings or long road trips. Those memories build on the foundations of the people we are today. Then we recall the people who influenced and loved us. They are the ones we looked to for safety and security. We trusted them to steward the innocence of our youth.
This first episode is entitled, “Marketplace Ministry,” and it is a story of how God tears down the idols we build up, in order to show that He is God alone. It is a story of healing the scars from childhood, which for many of us, becomes the very thing that immobilizes our adult lives. We know that some scars of childhood leave layers that must be peeled away in order for healing to occur. This is where our story begins. Meet Lutisha Goebel, owner and operator of Phoenix Strange Brew Coffee & Market in Glendale, Arizona. I met with Tish one afternoon for a comfortable, yet open discussion, as Tish recalled significant events beginning in her childhood that set up a pattern of dysfunctional abuse, mental and physical illness, and heartbreak; only to discover that God was always with her, and had been establishing her steps to where she is on now. You will note that Tish’s retelling is raw, but honest, and may not be suitable for younger audiences, so I caution adults and parents to use discretion with your young ones when listening to this episode.
