Marketplace Ministry
Hello, and welcome to In the Lighthouse brought to you by Carry the Light Ministries. This is Daphne Collins, your host for our time together. The lighthouse is your safe harbor from the storm. Are you presently embroiled in a turbulent storm? I would like to hear from you, and so would many others. You can email me at TheLighthouse@carrythelightministries.com and tell us your story. Or perhaps you want to encourage someone? Let us know through your comments. We continue with Part Two of Marketplace Ministry, a story about overcoming the scars of childhood that were carried over into adulthood, but with devastating effects. We learned from our guest how the extreme abuse inflicted upon her by her mother, caused her to turn to the older and stronger matriarch of the family, her grandmother, who would provide to her sanctuary and an early foundation of going to church for solace. This is where she first heard about Jesus. But her understanding of Jesus was wrapped up in the safety of her grandmother’s rescue of her from her own mother’s abuse. The grandmother had become her salvation – her god. But our Creator God has an answer to people, places and things that we give our time and relevance to. In Exodus 20:3-5 God told Moses to teach the people, “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me.” Do you believe that this command still holds true today? If so, have you asked God to reveal to you any unknown idols you might be holding in your heart? We’re going to hear from our guest about how God revealed the idol of her heart, and how she reconciled her thinking, and turned from the idol to a burgeoning love for Jesus. Okay, let’s get started!
Storms have a way of raging, as high winds threaten to submerge the flimsy boat fiercely struggling to stay afloat. But eventually we learn that much wisdom can be gained when we choose to seek the Lord in quiet and stillness. In his book Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis wrote, “The only things we can keep are the things we freely give to God. What we try to keep for ourselves is just what we are sure to lose.”[1]
In this second installment of “Marketplace Ministry,” Lutisha Goebel, owner and operator of Phoenix Strange Brew Coffee & Market in Glendale, Arizona, continues with her story of how God began tearing down the idols she carefully constructed during the turbulent years of dysfunctional behavior, physical and mental illness, and finally, heartbreak. Through her story, Tish explains how the ideals we set up in our minds are simply just – ideals – thus, they hold no true reality. And when we place all our hopes in imperfect people, eventually there must be a reckoning, and a realignment of our understanding of who God is. Tish’s retelling is frank and honest, and may not be suitable for younger audiences, so I caution adults and parents to use discretion with your young ones when listening to this episode.
