True Freedom
True Freedom
Isn’t it ironic that the ways we tend to chase after freedom can become ways that make us feel trapped? For example, small children have a tendency to push for having their way in just about everything, even if their way may bring them harm. It is the responsibility of the parent to protect them from potential dangers they couldn’t otherwise foresee, because they are children. Adults, however, are known to behave in the same manner. A common pattern of behavior is observed after marital divorce. The former spouses, now newly single, will likely express themselves in questionable ways during this transition period by doing anything they feel like, because they are now free from their former spouse. I’ve observed impetuous behavior in so many acquaintances, and I recognize how frequently people make unfortunate choices, which will inevitably lead to regret down the road.
Many truths about freedom are found in the Bible. For example, John 8:32 says, “and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 contends, “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” And of course, we rejoice in what Paul says in Galatians 5:1, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” So we clearly see that there is a connection between walking in truth and the Spirit, and being free in Christ! We are not burdened by the things of the world that are often brought on by poor choices.
Paul David Tripp discusses freedom in different ways. He says, “OBEDIENCE is freedom.” Then he goes on to say, “Obedience never ends freedom; it is the evidence that true freedom has entered your life and has liberated your heart.” In two additional observations, Tripp comments, “The doorway to freedom is submission.” And finally, he concludes, “Real freedom is only ever found when God’s grace liberates you to live for One infinitely greater than yourself.” So, Tripp proposes that the essential element to trusting God over our lives is to obey in order to experience genuine freedom.
Hopefully, the examples provided here will encourage us to Walk in His Way, so that we, too, can enjoy true freedom.
Dear Heavenly Father, please help us to increasingly trust You alone to guide our lives, so that we may enjoy the freedom You promise in Your Word. Let us never forget that obedience is the key to Your heart and the only path to true freedom.
In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.
