One Way or Another - Change is Gonna Come!

One Way or Another - Change is Gonna Come!

How many of us genuinely look forward to and embrace change? For most of humanity, change can be anything from challenging to downright terrifying. Why do you suppose this? Perhaps the answer lies in who is in charge of our lives. If we believe ourselves to be as William Earnest Henley conveys in the last two lines of his poem, Invictus, “The master of my fate, the captain of my soul,” to assert that we control our destiny, especially in the face of adversity. What then happens if we take charge and morph into a “My way or the highway” human, which can lead to strong resistance to change and really stunt our growth?

The Bible has something to say about our need for change and, ultimately, about God’s provision for changing us. Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” It sounds like God truly wants to grow us into being more like Him, but isn’t it enough just to have “our ticket to Heaven?” If this were true, Jesus would never have told His disciples in Matthew 7:16, “By their fruit you will recognize them,” meaning that others would see the godly changes in them and their followers, which would make them fruitful for God’s kingdom work here on Earth, until Jesus returns.

In 2 Corinthians 5:17, the scripture reminds us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” Wouldn’t you agree that God not only welcomes change in us, but He also provides it? If we were fine the way we were before coming to faith in Christ, we would have no need for change. But God loves us so much; He plans to change us into the man or woman He created us to be. And by His loving potter’s hand, He can transform us day by day, as we trust Him to make us more like Jesus. Now that’s a change we can all welcome and embrace!

Let us Walk in His Way.

Dear Heavenly Father, please give us the courage to surrender control of our own lives to Your loving guidance and care. Help us accept that change is necessary to accomplish Your purpose for us in this world. We want to love you better and trust you more. We believe Your will be done in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
