Be Prayerful

Be Prayerful

What might be your biggest obstacle to a more consistent, fruitful, and satisfying prayer life? The most common response to this question is busyness: there are not enough hours in the day to fit that in. Another common deterrent to consistent prayer is the feeling that God is not answering, which can shake steadfast faith. When I am in either of these situations, one of the first things I’ve encouraged myself to do is turn to Psalm 37:4, which says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

First, delighting myself in the Lord means truly enjoying time spent with Him, in worship, in His Word, in His Creation, and in prayer. When we put time with the Lord as our first priority, what occurs quickly is the sense that what we now ‘desire’ might become more in line with what He desires for us. It can be a matter of submitting our wills to His will and trusting Him to know what’s best for us, in order to lead us along His path for our lives.

Second, God strongly encourages us to connect with Him in prayer, as Paul says in Colossians 4:2: “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” It’s pretty clear that the Bible reveals the necessity of seeking the Lord in prayer as part of our lifestyle, rather than as an obligatory hoop we are asked to jump through to gain His favor. A rich prayer life is like adding a supernatural boost to our walk with the Lord. It gives us greater access to His wisdom, power, mercy, and love, which are huge catalysts for ‘fruit’ in our Christian growth.

Let us Walk in His Way.

Dear Heavenly Father, prayer is so important to You that You gave us a specific challenge in 2 Chronicles 7:14, which states, “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” May it be as You say, Father, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
