Be in Community
Do you find meaning, joy, and satisfaction in gathering with other believers for worship and the preaching of the Word every Sunday? Perhaps you agree with those who say, “My religion is private,” or some who insist, “I worship God in nature by myself.” Interestingly, we’re not working on a level playing field. God makes it very clear in Scripture that He is a relational Being, evidenced in the Bible by the presence of the Triune Godhead, another name for the three-in-one Trinity, which describes the essential and divine qualities that make God who He is.
We first see this in Genesis 2:18. After God created Adam, He said, “It is not good for the man to be alone,” and proves that God wants us in good company. The New Testament also emphasizes the importance of community. In Galatians 6:2, the Apostle Paul encourages the believers. “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” The writer of Hebrews also offers direction to the Christian believers with a mild sense of urgency. “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24-25).
God places a high value on community and shared life experience, as we grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus, within the conclave of His Church. The “Church” is not a building but the Body of believers, tasked with becoming true disciples so that we may fully represent Him on Earth as we await the day of His return. So what does this look like? Let’s consider the embers of a campfire: When they’re spread out, they tend to lose heat and eventually turn to ash, but when they are gathered together, they burst into a mighty flame. This is the way it should be with God’s Church!
Let us Walk in His Way.
Dear Heavenly Father, as tempting as it is to practice solo worship rather than gather with one another as Your Church, we are instead called to “do life” together as Christian believers. Your design for Your followers is to walk closely with You by joining life groups and participating in ministries within the local church. Please help us find our way there, so that we may grow and thrive as we seek to be more like Jesus Christ. In His name, we pray. Amen.
