Be Absolutely Surrendered
Be Absolutely Surrendered
How hard is it for you to submit to an authority figure? How would you feel about completely surrendering all control? Many Christians are aware of the call to submit to God’s authority over our lives, as well as to the authority of those over us. Submission often entails an element of trust in order for us to feel safe in allowing another to ‘call the shots’ in our life circumstances. So, we may find that if we trust and respect the one asking us to submit to their authority, it is a more fluid experience compared to submitting to unreasonable people in charge.
In his book “Absolute Surrender,” author Andrew Murray states plainly that in order to please and obey God, “The condition of blessing is absolute surrender of all.” This sounds like a lofty goal, but again, the magnitude of the surrender of our wills to obey God’s will in our lives is directly proportional to our level of trust in God to lead and guide us.
At a recent speaking engagement for a local ministry, when the staff was asked to choose their “word of the year” to depict a spiritual goal worth attaining, I was surprised that, beyond the typical choices like peace, humility, and servant, the most common goal word among the group was SURRENDER! The truth is, even those of us in ministry struggle to surrender our wills to God, yet are aware of the necessity to do so. A biblical example of absolute surrender is found in I Kings 20:4, when King Ahab of Israel negotiated surrender terms with the victorious king of Aram, saying, “I am yours, and all that I have.” Can we say that to God and mean it?
Let us Walk in His Way.
Dear Heavenly Father, the Apostle Paul exhorts us in Romans 12:1, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” May it be so for us, Lord. May it be so for us. Amen.
