Jesus, Our Mighty God
Did you know, if Jesus entered the World’s Strongest Man competition, He would win it every time? How do we know that? Isaiah 9:6 says, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called…Mighty God…"
The Hebrew words for “Mighty” and “God” are “gibbor” which means, “mighty.” And “el,” which, speaking of God, always describes Him as “The Mighty One.” So literally, what Isaiah 9:6 is saying is, “He will be called…The Mighty, Mighty One.” The Hebrew word for “mighty” also means that Jesus is stronger and mightier than anyone or anything. He is like the greatest fighter who will NEVER be defeated. Praise the Lord! The word for “mighty” is commonly used of heroes and champions of war in the Old Testament. It describes the great soldiers who fought valiantly on the fields of battle. Jesus is our great and mighty Warrior who triumphs over all his enemies. He’s the Mighty God!
The word “mighty” also means to “bind up anything that is broken.” In other words, Jesus, our MIGHTY God, “binds up” the weak to make them strong. Psalm 147:3 says that God “heals the brokenhearted” (literally, those who are broken in pieces and crushed in spirit) and “binds (or bandages) up their wounds.” Beloved, what things does our Mighty God have to “bind up” for you today? Hurt, disappointment, fear of failure, guilt from sexual impurity and wrong choices, freedom from the past, fear of the future? Jesus promises to bind up your wounds and your brokenness because He is the Mighty God who will never be defeated!
Beloved, Jesus not only has the power of God, He is the God of power! He is our Mighty God! And best of all, He’s here for you! Do you know Him as your Savior? Make this the greatest Christmas ever by receiving the greatest gift of all – Jesus, our Mighty God!
