Tough Love
Do you have someone in your life who sharpens you?
As a blacksmith sharpens iron, it is a strategic process that requires precision and detail. There is heat, friction, and hammering involved. This process aids in forming the tool in order for it to be put into service. When the blacksmith completes the crucial process, the blades are sharper and more efficient. This proverb metaphorically depicts two believers sharpening one another spiritually. Spending time together, exhorting, praying, admonishing, and sharing God's word sharpens our lives. A genuine friend will speak the truth in love. This authentic relationship involves a willingness to show vulnerability and accountability. Sharpening requires intentionality and can sometimes be difficult, and uncomfortable.
During and following the pandemic, our relationships with one another have become fractured as we distanced ourselves. One of Satan’s devices is to keep us isolated so that we are more susceptible to his lies. For this reason, we are encouraged to be in fellowship with one another. Healthy relationships honor God and protect us from the attacks of the enemy. At some level, we all need a close friendship with someone we can trust. Where there is trust and a sharing of burdens, we grow in our willingness to mutually strengthen one another. The image of the blacksmith hammering the metal against the anvil demonstrates how a blunt tool is made effective when it has been tempered and shaped. We too are sharpened, when we are in relationships that make us more effective for the Lord.
As you are sharpened by your relationships, how do you respond?
How have you benefited from Christ-centered relationships?
Father God thank you for the relationships in my life that have sharpened me. I ask that you give me the courage and boldness to be transparent in these relationships and allow me opportunities to sharpen others. I pray that you give me wisdom and discernment so that I may speak the truth in love consistently. I pray these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.
