Excellence in Everything
In what ways can you be a godly example in the workplace?
The Apostle Paul addressed this letter to the early church in Colossae. He encouraged the Colossians to put their heart into proper perspective. During this time, these early Christians were persecuted for their faith, for proclaiming Jesus as Lord. They endured much persecution. Because slavery was the common practice, corporal punishment for disobedience was legal. Despite these conditions, Paul urged them to put all their effort into every task as if they were serving Christ.
Christians today continue to face challenges and will experience hardships. Nevertheless, we must keep our focus on Jesus and remember that it is he whom we represent and honor. We are encouraged to give our greatest effort and potential, despite the task, to all our endeavors. Whether you are a homemaker, a CEO of a major corporation, a server in a restaurant, or even a volunteer at a food bank, we should exhibit excellence in everything. As followers of Jesus, our excellence will distinguish us from our fellow workers who don’t proclaim Christ. We are to set an example for everyone around us so that we can positively impact non-believers. Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
We are representatives of Christ to the world; we are not to be man-pleasers. Your workplace is the perfect opportunity to shine for Jesus; every deed or task you accomplish should glorify him. Nothing that we do for him is in vain. One day, we will all give an account to God for our lives and receive our inheritance of eternal rewards.
How can you rely on the Holy Spirit for daily tasks?
Father God, thank you for the opportunity of work you have provided me. I pray that you give me grace and strength to endure the demands placed before me daily. Control my words to be gentle and kind towards my co-workers and others I encounter throughout the day. Allow your light to shine through me so that others will see you. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
