Living United
How can you cultivate a spirit of unity with your brothers and sisters in Christ?
King David wrote this psalm as a hymn of praise when God’s people traveled to their sacred destination. It was included during the religious festivals held in Jerusalem, where the people of Israel met annually, united in worship to the Lord. It is a reminder that as brothers and sisters in Christ, we are to live in unity. Our brotherly (phileo) love should come from a pure heart devoted to God and directed towards one another.
“We do life together” is a phrase often stated in churches or written in church bulletins, but how is this genuinely displayed in our daily lives? God created us to be in a relationship with one another; he commanded us to live peaceably and united. Jesus showed his disciples how they were to “do life together” as his followers. He understands the challenges and difficulties we sometimes face. Disagreements should be handled with wisdom and love. When we submit to the Holy Spirit’s work through us, we will eventually demonstrate access to spiritual fruit that glorifies our heavenly Father.
Unity occurs when we agree to go in the same direction with the same agenda and goals. Doing so will require us to be humble and put aside our selfish desires for the benefit of others. As members of the Body of Christ, we must examine what best promotes the whole body instead of ourselves.
Operating with one accord brings blessings and strength. A unified presence allows us to be steadfast in our faith, protect one another during spiritual battles, and to overcome the enemy, Satan. Our unity demonstrates the presence of God in our lives. His favor will rest on us as we glorify his name, through harmonious interactions with one another. We are to become alluring witnesses for Christ to an unbelieving world.

What scriptures come to mind when tensions turn to conflict?
Father God, please help me to live with my brothers and sisters in peace, love, and unity. Keep me free from sowing discord when disputes arise. Help me to resolve it quickly and in a way pleasing to you. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
