Created with Purpose

Psalm 139:13-16

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

How do you respond to God’s word that says you are, “fearfully and wonderfully made?”

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. This verse is a beautiful reminder that our heavenly Father created every part of our being with purpose and intention. In this Psalm, David is praising God for the way he designed him. The word wonderfully is the Hebrew word pala which means to be separate or distinguished. He made us each unique to carry out his plan; every person is a masterpiece of God.

Despite the words fearfully and wonderfully made, we often criticize our physical appearance or emphasize our inadequacies. Every time we diminish ourselves, it grieves the Father because we were created in his image.

Our culture makes it challenging to have confidence in who we are. We must not succumb to the pressure and expectations of the world.  As children of the King, we should embrace God's word. He knows every single detail about us and is sovereign. From the time of our birth until the time we depart this world, our days are numbered and ordained by Him.

The next time we question how or why God designed us the way he did, consider these verses and remember that David sang them as a praise. Our value and our worth are rooted in how fearfully and wonderfully made we are.

Considering this Psalm of praise, how do you turn your negative self-image into a positive?

Father God, thank you for the way you designed me. Help me to embrace the way you created me and the purpose of which you laid out for me. I choose to believe what your word says that “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” I will honor you all the days of my life. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
