Be in the Word

Be in the Word

Why is it important that you read your Bible on a regular basis? Well, the Bible speaks to this topic in many passages. First, Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” In other words, the Bible lights our way as we move through life and shows us where to go. So, as this verse declares, reading the Bible gives us direction. In Psalm 119:11, the psalmist states why he reads and memorizes scripture. He says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Reading the Bible can help us avoid sinning against God, as it contains guidelines for living in a way that pleases Him. Another reason for us to make a regular habit of reading the Bible is that it is dynamic, powerful, and able to transform us. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

My personal testimony reflects this truth and explains why I so highly treasure its transforming power. It was literally the Word itself that God used to save my soul. As I read the four Gospels back in 1976, my intent was to prove them false and unworthy of belief. I was unable to accomplish that goal, however, because, by the time I got to John 14:6, where Jesus says to His disciples, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,” I was on my face on the carpet in my room, crying out to God in genuine repentance for having not believed Him until that moment. Since then, reading the Bible is a daily discipline I practice for all the reasons listed. Without the “Sword of the Spirit,” which is the Word of God, I would not know the Lord well enough to desire to have an intimate relationship with Him. How about you?

Let us Walk in His Way.

Dear Lord, thank You for Your mighty Word, which You have so lovingly preserved for us all these years. Please give us a hunger and thirst for the riches within its pages, that we would know You better and love You more. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
