Are You a Braveheart or a Shrinking Violet?

Are You a Braveheart or a Shrinking Violet?

In our increasingly turbulent world, do you find yourself feeling confident and strong or paralyzed with fear at the thought of so many things out of control? Many would respond, both because, despite the good that can be found in our lives, we quake with fear at the uncertainty brought about by global conflicts, challenges to our health and welfare, and situations that tend to rob us of our sleep. So, what is courage, and where can it be found?

Courage has been defined as “The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, and more, without fear.” It has also been defined as “The ability to do something that frightens one” as well as “Strength in the face of pain or grief.” I think I prefer the latter definitions, because without some level of fear, how best can we overcome the obstacles set by what we are called to do with purpose?  After all, each of us can be called to do something that will require risk.

So, what’s the secret to being courageous in times of difficulty? The Bible has several references that pave the way for us to stand strong in the face of great challenge. Joshua 1:9 exhorts, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” This is God’s promise to us. His Holy Spirit is in us with every breath we take and goes wherever we go. The Bible reminds us not to shrink from fear. Psalm 118:6 states, “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” I hope those two verses are literal enCOURAGEment to you as they are to me. If we really believe God is all-powerful, all-knowing, present everywhere at once, all-loving and merciful, then we must do as He commands and be strong and courageous. Princess Diana once famously said, “When I do good, I am not frightened.” May this become our banner, our motto as we endeavor to Walk in His Way.

Dear Heavenly Father, please hold us in Your loving arms when times of uncertainty cause us to shrink back in fear. Help us feel Your presence and Your loving care through every situation. Help us to know You better and trust You more. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
