To the Righteous Voter: Remember Demas

To the Righteous Voter: Remember Demas

Have you ever felt abandoned by somebody you care deeply about?

The Apostle Paul understood how abandonment felt.  In 2 Timothy 4:10 Paul says, “Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica.” Demas was a fellow laborer and a confidante of Paul. They were dear friends.  Yet, we learn Demas deserted Paul right before Paul was to be executed.  The words “having loved this present world” indicates Demas loved his own ease and safety more than the disciples’ mantra to “die to self” and ultimately, potentially suffer martyrdom with Paul in Rome.

Was Demas a true believer?  Didn’t he buy into the life of a disciple?  It seems following Jesus was all fine and dandy when things were going well but when real sacrifice was required, especially when his life was on the line, that was a different story! His decision to abandon Paul was also a decision to abandon the faith he once proclaimed, and that affected more than just Paul.

Beloved, as you evaluate the candidates for President, take a serious look into their political track records, their political convictions, their platforms, the promises they have made, and if they have kept them or not. Can they be trusted to represent America, to represent you, honorably and faithfully? Do they keep their promises only in times of prosperity or do they have a history of abandonment when the going gets rough? Then take this information to the LORD in prayer. Commit it to Him, and He will guide you in your decision. When you leave the voting booth in November, remember Demas, his decision was his alone, yet it affected so many others. Your decision, also, is yours alone and it, too, will affect so many others!  Remember Demas!
