The Armor of God: The Helmet of Salvation
Why would the Apostle Paul compare a piece of weaponry, like the helmet of the Roman soldier, to the gift of salvation? Was he in his right mind?
Perhaps it was because the helmet of the Roman soldier was very beautiful and intricately ornate, so much so that when a Roman soldier walked by, it was his helmet that everyone noticed. In Ephesians 6:10-18, as Paul was teaching on the armor of God, when he said in verse 17, “…and take the helmet of salvation…” It was salvation that he likened to that helmet. Paul understood that the gift of salvation is the most gorgeous, the most intricate, the most elaborate, and the most ornate gift God has ever given us! He knew that when we walk in the powerful reality of all that salvation means, like the Roman soldier, we will be noticed, we will stand out!
Did you know the helmet of the Roman soldier was made of bronze? It was so strong and so heavy that nothing could pierce it, not even the battleaxe of the enemy! If Roman soldiers dared to remove their helmets in battle, surely, heads would roll! Beloved, take up the helmet of salvation because the enemy of your soul is coming for your head also! He knows that the control center for your life is in your mind; if he can seize control of your thoughts, your body will soon follow!
So, put on the helmet of salvation by believing the gospel. Call on the name of Jesus, and you will be saved! Then, as you allow the word of God to become preeminent in your life, you will allow it to work in your thoughts, and your mind will not only be renewed, it will be transformed, and you will be in your right mind! May the gift of salvation and all that it brings become like an elaborate, ornate, and beautiful bronze helmet on your head to protect your mind from the battle-axe of the enemy! In this cosmic spiritual war we are in, hard hats are required.
