Mighty to Save
Mighty to Save
What would you do if you knew your life would be over in minutes? Matthew 14:22-33 (ESV) gives us the account of Jesus walking on the water. In the midst of tumultuous seas, Peter boldly steps out of the boat and begins to walk towards Jesus. Verse 30 tells us, “…when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, ‘Lord, save me.’”
Spurgeon once said, “Sinking times are praying times.” As Peter begins to sink, I wonder if his life flashed before his eyes. From the depths of his frightened soul, he knew who to call out to for salvation! Peter knew Jesus is “mighty to save!” Since becoming His disciple, he saw Him feed thousands with two fish and five loaves of bread (Matthew 14:13-21), he saw Him heal the withered hand of a man in the synagogue (Matthew 12:9-14), restore sight to the blind (Matthew 9:27-31), raise a young girl from the dead (Matthew 9:18-26), cleanse a leper (Matthew 8:1-4), cast out demons (Matthew 8:28-32), heal a paralytic (Matthew 9:1-2), and heal his mother-in-law (Matthew 8:14-15). All in the space of months. Peter knew Jesus is “mighty to save!”
After crying out to Jesus to save him from drowning, verse 31 tells us, “Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him.” Beloved, “The Lord your God is among you; He is mighty to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17). Is it your health? Your finances? Is it your marriage? A wayward child? An uncertain future? You don’t have to sink under troubling circumstances anymore! Today, call out to Jesus and He will immediately reach out His hand and take hold of you and your circumstances because Jesus is “mighty to save!” Praise the Lord!
