David: Grabbing onto God in the Midst of Injustice

David: Grabbing onto God in the Midst of Injustice

Have you ever come close to drowning? I experienced this while vacationing in Aruba in 2003, and it was terrifying! I will say this: there is a unique kind of panic that overtakes you when you feel your life about to be overwhelmed. King David had a similar experience, and he writes about it in Psalm 69, listen to verses 1-4, “Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.  I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.  I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.  Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me.”

The emotional and spiritual accusations and turmoil all but pushed David to the point where he felt like he was drowning. With his life spinning out of control, listen to David’s solution in verse 13: “But I pray to you, Lord, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation.”

What “deep waters” are you in today? Are you sinking? Are you trying to pretend that you’re fine? Like David, bring your messy, tear-filled prayers to God. While you may not appreciate the situation you’re in, you can be lavished by God’s love. Look to the cross! See the One who bore your shame. See the One who drank from God’s cup of wrath so you could drink from God’s cup of living water. Hallelujah! Finding comfort not in easy answers but in God’s sure salvation, David vowed, in verse 30, “I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.” Beloved, when you pray and ask for God’s help, your circumstances may or may not change; David’s didn’t, but he praised and thanked God anyway, and you can too. When accusations and injustices and turmoil seek to pull you under, like David, grab onto God - the path out of the deep begins with prayer and ends with praise! Hallelujah!
