Moses the Deliverer: This is Holy Ground

Moses the Deliverer - Part Two: This is Holy Ground

Season 3 - Episode 2

Hello, and welcome to this special edition of In the Lighthouse: your safe harbor from the storm. I’m Daphne Collins, your Lighthouse Keeper, welcoming you back to hear more biblical stories of “Heroes of the Old Testament.” In this episode, I’m happy to present Part Two of our dramatic series "Moses the Deliverer,” and this episode is entitled "This is Holy Ground.” In Part One, you heard about what happened to the family of the Patriarch Joseph following his death. The protections they enjoyed while he was alive and a few years after his passing were because of his reputation for saving Egypt and the surrounding areas during seven years of great famine in the land. But his reputation could only extend to the next pharaoh ruling the land. Eventually, a pharaoh came into power and devised a way of controlling the growing population of Jacob’s descendants, who were not Egyptian-born but increased in number. For this pharaoh, they were becoming a drain on Egyptian resources. Politically, his strategy was to subjugate this growing population and make them serve as slaves to build his cities and monuments and to work the land.

The people cried out to God because of their oppression at the hands of Pharaoh and the Egyptians, and God answered. He commissioned Moses, a man who once lived between both worlds, as an ennobled prince in Egypt and a Hebrew slave. His commission was to go to Pharaoh and demand, in the name of the Most High God, that Pharaoh let His people go so that they could sojourn in the wilderness and worship Him. Moses, like any human being given such a tremendous responsibility, responded in fear and trembling at this command, but he eventually obeyed and, with his brother Aaron, went to fulfill his mission.

The wicked Pharaoh did not take kindly to this command of Moses’ God and, out of the hardness of his heart, refused to give in despite the terrible plagues of judgment sent against Egypt for their worship of false gods and their treatment of the Hebrew slaves. The culmination of these plagues ended with the deaths of all firstborn of Egypt—man and beast—who were struck down in a single night. With impassioned fury, Pharaoh, whose firstborn son died from this pronouncement of God, demanded that Moses and Aaron leave and take the Hebrews with them from Egypt and his presence.

God would see His will and purpose fulfilled according to His word. But a wicked man fueled by a heart hardened by God will act in a destructive manner with choices that are historically embarrassing and, therefore, unmentioned in the chronicles of the Pharaohs of the Egyptian Dynasties. The Pharaoh who ruled for fifty-four years in Egypt and gave the edict to toss the baby boys of the Hebrew slaves into the Nile was Thutmose III of the 18th Dynasty. It was his daughter, Hatshepsut, who adopted a baby found floating in a basket amongst the reeds of the Nile and named him Moses. Thutmose III died during the years Moses lived with the Kenite tribe in Midian as a shepherd, and his son, Amenhotep II, brother of Hatshepsut, became the new king of Egypt, thereby noted as the Pharaoh of the Exodus with whom Moses sparred. It was his eldest son, Webensenu, who perished in the plague of the firstborn. His second son, Thutmose IV, became the next ruler of Egypt following the defeat of his father against God at the Red Sea.

After their swift exodus from Egypt, a vengeful Amenhotep devised a plan to overtake the fleeing Hebrew slaves and their leader in the wilderness and kill them. His hardened heart would not allow this offense against his dignity and country. As he gathered his armies for pursuit, his anger was fueled against Moses and the God who sent him. Their reckoning was coming.

Okay, let’s get started!
