A Healing Faith
Hello, and welcome to In the Lighthouse: your safe harbor from the storm, brought to you by Carry the Light Ministries. This is Daphne Collins, your host for our time together. Today we’re presenting Part Two of A Healing Faith, the dramatic testimony of a journey of faith as told to us by our guest, Patti Stoltz. We learned in Part One that Patti is a breast cancer survivor – not once, not twice, but three times; and all through the non-traditional approach of naturopathic medicine! But more importantly, we learned of the burgeoning faith in God’s abiding presence that kept Patti determined to fight the good fight and advocate for her own health choices amid the antiseptic advice of the medical community. Being healed from cancer is not the story – the faith which comes from the relationship formed with her Creator God in the midst of a turbulent storm is. The Bible is where the relationship begins. It is where we learn about God and his character. It is where we begin to develop a trust in him because of his faithfulness. When the chips are down, God proves that he is the same yesterday, today, and forever. When confronting a battle that’s been unceremoniously cast before you, where would you turn first? What would your strategy be? Will muscle memory kick into gear right away? How about if it’s the second or third time?

God’s sovereignty comes into question every time life-altering events hit the forefront of our thoughts. We all need someone to blame for the helplessness we feel about situations beyond our control. Our misunderstanding of God’s character of aseity – his independence or self-existence – is why we bargain with God in our supplications. If we offer something to God in exchange for something we want, and the desired outcome is not achieved, is he still God? In Isaiah 55:8-9 (ESV), the prophet answers this question concerning the sovereignty of God when he declares, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways . . . For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Nevertheless, the Lord God invites us to come to him in our need and with faith. Just two verses before describing his unfathomable ways, through his prophet God invites us to “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near.” The supplicant is left hoping that God will hear and incline to their prayer. Yet, Isaiah speaks of God’s providential hand in 55:10-11, “For as the rain and snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” We are not to question God’s will or purpose for us; we are merely invited to be at peace and accept that he has more knowledge of everything past, present, and future for us, and has our best interests in his keeping. Yes, his will may not be our will – but it’s better and beyond what we could possibly understand on this side of eternity.
Patti’s account is her own retelling as it happened, and, she offers opinions that may differ from your own. The beauty of God’s economy is that we are at liberty to make our own decisions concerning our life and death situations. Although what you hear is honest and straightforward, it may not be suitable for certain audiences, so I caution adults and parents to use discretion with your young ones when listening to this episode.
