It’s Harvest Time

Matthew 9:37-38

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

Do you make the most out of every opportunity to share Jesus with others?

When Jesus exhorted his disciples to pray for the harvest, his heart was grieved over the condition of the hearts around them. They were helpless, lost, and unaware of their condition. The “harvest” Jesus referred to then is the exact condition of the people in our world today. There are people who have yet to hear the good news of Jesus and receive healing. There is so much work to be done while we are still here on earth. In Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus commanded his disciples and everyone who are his followers to share the gospel to all ends of the earth, and to baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

There are people who are ready to hear the gospel message. Although they may not be aware of it, many are desperate and need hope to continue in this life. God can use us right where we are; we don’t require higher education to share Jesus with someone. Encounters with others can happen daily and may include co-workers, family, neighbors, or even a stranger. There will always be opportunities to share your faith. A laborer genuinely believes God is all-sufficient and has personally experienced his power. All we need to do is be willing and available.  We aren’t required to be theologians or experts in God’s word. The Holy Spirit will prompt you, equip you, and give you the words to speak at the precise moment. You may be the answer to someone's prayer.

We are called to be his hands and feet and to bring light in the darkness. Matthew 24:36 reminds the laborer that no one knows the hour when Christ will return, so there is no time to waste. There is abundant work to be done; the harvest is plentiful. May the promise of Jesus’ return compel us to share the gospel and offer salvation through him as our only hope. When reflecting on our potential response to The Great Commission, John Piper concluded, “We can go, send, or disobey.” What will you choose to do?

What can you do today to be more intentional about sharing the good news?

Are you willing to support and pray for more laborers of the harvest? Will you be counted as one?

Father God, please give me a heart that breaks for what breaks yours. Please help me to respond quickly to the prompting of the Holy Spirit in all things. May I obey the command of The Great Commission. I pray for those who fear sharing the gospel. Much of the fear that comes from being man pleasers and fear of rejection. For those who feel inadequate, give them courage and empower them to speak beyond their fear. Help us all to step out of our comfort zones and be used as a vessel for your glory. It is in Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
