Refuge in Our Trouble
What does the phrase “God is our refuge” mean to you?
Undoubtedly, we will encounter troubled times in our lives, but God declares that He will be our refuge and strength. The word refuge is a hiding place, shelter, or protection from danger. When we align ourselves with God’s will, He will protect and strengthen us. Moreover, the Holy Spirit will sustain us through whatever we are experiencing.
We must recognize that God will not always remove the challenges from us. However, hardships posture our hearts to rely on His strength and completely depend on Him. We should not fear situations or people who attempt to threaten our well-being. King David was an admirable example of a man who experienced torment, yet he sought God for protection. He poured his heart out to Him and trusted God to intervene.
When we consistently seek God for help or protection, we will begin to identify him as our shelter. There may be a temptation to look for safety elsewhere, but anything else will attest to a false sense of security. God is our refuge greater than any human or earthly dwelling, a true sanctuary, and our remedy. We can confidently approach His throne with our petitions because he is always faithful.
Who or what do you resort to in times of distress?
What is on your heart today that you want to pour out to God?
Father God, thank you that I can run to you for refuge during troubles, worries, or fear. You are my strength and my safe place. I believe I can depend on you no matter what I face. Please help me navigate the challenges that come my way and continue to trust in your word. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
