Comfort in our Pain
How has God used painful situations in your life for his purpose?
In his letter to the Corinthian churches, Paul refers to God as the “Father of compassion,” and the “God of all comfort.” By his mercy and love, during our times of affliction, he is eager to provide comfort to us, in all circumstances. When we turn to God in our brokenness, he is always available to nurture our souls. He sees us and cares for us; whatever the trials. Our Heavenly Father already knows every detail and outcome. He is our source of peace, joy, and strength. Although it can be difficult to fathom while we’re in the midst of our storm, there is a divine purpose for our pain. When we walk through adversity, if we abide in Jesus, we can be confident that he is working something out in us.
It is during these times that we must also be spiritually vigilant and seek fellowship and encouragement from other believers. In our vulnerability, the enemy wants to keep us isolated so that we feel alone and hopeless. However, with Jesus, there is always hope, he will never leave us nor forsake us. His grace is always sufficient for us.
The wonder of it all is that God offers us his peace through our troubles so we can also “comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” Like grace, comfort is active. It is a powerful gift not only to be received, but to be extended to those around us. We glorify God by offering empathy, compassion and comfort to others who are in distress. Our testimony has a way of supernaturally advancing God’s kingdom. Where there is fruit, his power is multiplied through us. His grace and love will overflow from our lives and pour into the lives of others.
Here are practical ways to give comfort to others:
1. Be an active listener (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
2. Pray for one another (James 5:16)
3. Offer encouragement and wise counsel (Proverbs 15:22-23)
4. Practice hospitality (Romans 12:13)
5. Give a hug, send a card of encouragement, or drop off a meal (John 15:12; Hebrews 13:16)
Our loving Father has a way of bringing people into our lives who will bring comfort and reassurance, and remind us that there is victory through Jesus in the trials we face. When we personally relate to someone’s story of hardship, we are reminded that God works all things out for our good (Romans 8:28). We should not be ashamed to share our experiences. They can bring light and hope to one who is in the pit of darkness and despair. It encourages the believer to persevere, and reminds us that God uses every circumstance for his glory.
How can you encourage someone today in their season of difficulty?
Can you recall a time when someone shared their story and provided you hope?
Lord I thank you that I can come to you with my afflictions. Thank you for your mercy and compassion for me. I pray Father that as I go through these trials, you give me the strength to persevere. I pray that you would use my situation to encourage and bless someone else who might be experiencing a similar situation. I believe that you use everything for my good and that you are sovereign. As I walk through adversity, help me to trust you and not lean on my own understanding. Amen.
