To the Righteous Voter: Remember Jephthah
To the Righteous Voter: Remember Jephthah
After hearing of someone who was elected to a position of leadership, have you ever thought to yourself “That’s not who I would have picked!”
In Judges 11-12, we have the fascinating story of Jephthah, chosen by the people of Israel to lead them in battle against the Ammonites, but a closer look at him can make one say, “That’s not who I would have picked!”
Jephthah did not have the pedigree, the proper preparation, nor the expected pursuits of a national leader. He was born of a prostitute, shunned by his father’s “proper” family, and excluded from all inheritance rights and social graces. He had no formal military experience but rather, he led a band of raiders. They were like land-based pirates, traveling around bullying and stealing from people—kind of like Robin Hood and his merry men except without the "giving to the poor" part.
I don’t know about you, but if I was picking the leader of a nation, pedigree, preparation, and pursuits would have to come into play at some point! Or would they? God chose Jephthah, knowing these things about him. Under God’s blessing, Jephthah defeated the Ammonites and freed Israel from 18 years of oppression. He was in office for six years.
Beloved, as you consider the candidates for this election and what each brings to the table and you make your decision on who you will vote for in November, know that God is sovereign over the affairs of man, and He will use everyone’s vote to reveal His choice for America. Get out and vote! And, if, at the end of the day, it wasn’t who you would have picked, remember Jephthah, despite all of his flaws, God looked at him and said he’s the guy I pick. And the rest will be history!
