Episode 12

Hello, and welcome to In the Lighthouse: your safe harbor from the storm. I’m Daphne Collins, your Lighthouse Keeper and host for our time together. You’ve been hearing the Lighthouse referred to as a “safe harbor,” but there are many other safe harbors out there. Today, we’ll be hearing from a woman who, along with her husband, built their own safe harbor to withstand the winds and rain. They also built a ministry together in addition to their individual careers and family. Sadly, the place originally intended as a sanctuary – their marriage – could no longer be their haven of peace and security. The shifting sands upon which the marriage was built also contained fault lines that were left unattended, and over time, the waters seeping through the cracks eventually wore against the foundation. When the strongholds of our lives begin to crumble because of unforeseen winds, where do we run for safety? How can we reconcile the loss of that for which we placed all trust? Well, Jesus offers the solution to the wise person who hears His words and puts their trust in Him. In Matthew 7:24-27,  Jesus said, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.  And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” When the waves appear insurmountable in the midst of the storm, we don’t always think clearly but act out of desperation. We must look for the light in the darkness to guide us to safer shores. Jesus is our light.

This episode is entitled Forgiveness and our guest is Kinney deHamel, a woman who learned exactly how powerful and secure the rock of her faith could be when the safe harbor of her marriage began to crumble. We will learn that even the most zealous Christ-follower can be tested in turbulent storms, only to bear witness to the soothing balm of forgiveness. Okay, let’s get started!

A vow, as universally understood, is a solemn promise or an oath. Traditionally, it is something that is sworn to a deity in the form of a covenant. It is a sober commitment, a bond, or a pledge that can be trusted as sworn to and agreed upon. When couples enter into a marriage, they make a vow to one another in the presence of an officiator and before witnesses to attest to the solemnity of their promise. Time will ultimately prove the veracity of vows spoken to one another. The bond of matrimony can become tenuous if outside forces continually pull against the strength of its tether. We bring our individuality into the marriage relationship. Our families, friends, traditions, preferences, idiosyncrasies, and worldly concerns have shaped our thinking before the first words of the vows are spoken. Thus, if we are not equipped with adequate knowledge of our future spouse, we risk turbulent storms ahead. Love and passion are very important to a successful union but over time, the couple must contend with the reality of life and its relative complications. We will now hear Kinney’s story about the complications that led to the loss of her safe harbor, and how the Rock of her Salvation brought her to calmer shores because she chose the road to Forgiveness.

Some parts of what is heard may not be suitable for younger audiences, so I caution adults and parents to use discretion when listening to this episode.
